Any Hip Fans In Here?

You should know that if you were lucky enough to have seen Tragically Hip preform in Toronto this week, I am pos-O-tively GREEN with envy.

They’re going to be within driving distance here in June. I’m hoping we can fit them in……

Alright You Guys..

quit acting all shy.

I asked you to share your favorite musicians and I get one response. And although Mike did offer up some interesting music, it certainly isn’t enough to keep me in new tunes for long.

Don, I’m especially disappointed in you. If I’m going to be forced to think of your nether regions every Tuesday night, the least you can do is suggest an artist or two.

And Bryan, WTH? You “talk” about music all the time.

Kathy you must know a half-dozen tunes that won’t make me look fat.

Crotchety, Lawrence Welk may not be my cup of tea, but throw one out there anyway!

Angelika, can’t you Tivo Hugh Laurie long enough to drop a kewl tune or two?

What are you all afraid of? Are you afraid people will snicker at your taste in music? ‘Cuz as the administrator here you do realize I have the ability to edit any derogatory comments, right? (Unless, of course you’re into boy-bands. In which case I can’t protect you.)

Introduce Me To…

your favorite musician.

I listen to music from dawn to dusk.

So my family must’ve finally gotten tired of me whining about the lousy battery in my MP3 player and
I was presented with a docking station for my birthday. Woo-hoo! Non-stop music is now at my fingertips.

Trouble is (no KWS pun intended) I only have about 200 songs in my library right now. Mostly ‘cuz I’m too lazy to hunt through all the available artists on Rhapsody/Amazon/iTunes. You could spend hour upon hour clicking and listening, listening and clicking.

So, your task is to introduce me to some new tunes…. with two exceptions. No rap/hip-hop and no country music. They both make my ears bleed.

Otherwise I have fairly eclectic tastes…. from Bob Marley to Korn.

And here’s one for you. This is Back Door Slam performing Outside Woman Blues…..

Gov’t Mule = Kewl Music

I’ve already announced to the world that I heart Kenny Wayne Shepherd. What I didn’t announce is that since seeing him perform this summer, I’ve spent more than one afternoon cyber-stalking him.

And those cyber-stalking activities led me to a restraining order one of Kenny’s favorite bands……Gov’t Mule.

This blues-rock jam band’s fall tour will consist of a quartet that includes Warren Haynes of Allman Bros fame, former Dickey Betts drummer Matt Abts, Danny Louis of Phish and a new bassist, Jorgen Carlson.

Okay, so maybe they’re not as pretty as Kenny, but with credentials like that, you just know these guys have some mad musical skills.

If you are fortunate enough to be able to attend one of their performances this fall, you should know that I’m green with envy.

If not, give their CD a listen; starting with Thorazine Shuffle.

I Heart Kenny Wayne Shepherd

I don’t know how I overlooked this Louisiana born self-taught guitarist, but I only discovered his music about a year ago. I’ve since loaded more of his tracks on my MP3 player than any other artist. And you won’t catch me skipping through them either; each soulful tune is as good as the next.

You’ll no doubt recognize the Stevie Ray Vaughn influence in Kenny’s music, but he adds his own enthusiasm to every chord. He’s so comfortable with the guitar…… it’s as if it’s just another extremity. His passion for the genre is unmistakable.

And his sound is somehow all the more impressive when you learn that not only has he never had a formal guitar lesson in his life, but he also can’t read music.

I was fortunate enough to see the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band in concert in July. If anyone could ever inspire you to want to pick up a guitar, it’s him.

His first album Ledbetter Heights was released when he was just 18.

And if you like what you hear, you’ll want to try Trouble Is…
next. Pay special attention to “Blue on Black.” It’ll make your ears happy.
